Abstract

This paper proposes a framework for analysing the value and readiness of an industrial sector or organisation for adopting Industry 4.0 technologies. To do this, approaches have been proposed for supporting assessment of the degree of automation involved in a sector or organisation and its degree of implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies. Based on an analysis of the critical questions to be asked in determining the need and suitability of a sector or organisation in adopting Industry 4.0 technologies, six key factors have been identified to determine the value of Industry 4.0 for the organisation and its readiness to adopt these technologies. These factors can be used for driving empirical studies of organisations or sectors in order to understand the value and the main areas of support needed to empower them to adopt Industry 4.0.
