Abstract

Ni coatings were electrodeposited using surfactants of different polarities. Pole figures analysis showed similar surface texture ({110} surface plane) for all coatings. Coating with cationic (CTAB) surfactant contained the highest fraction of low energy low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) but showed the highest corrosion rate due to geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) distribution. GNDs in coating with cationic surfactant promoted high grain orientation spread (GOS) values, suggesting increased coating strain. Coatings with anionic (SLS) surfactants showed higher corrosion resistance than other coatings because of the presence of GNDs as strings along the boundaries, which yielded lower coating strain
