Abstract

In this chapter, electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption characteristics and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties of fly ash cenosphere (FAC) and metal/metal oxide nanoparticles-coated FAC-containing polymer composites and its film is described. Both experimental and simulated results are discussed. A facile chemical route for metal and metal oxide nanoparticle coating over FAC is explained. The coating thickness needs to be optimized based on the microwave absorption property, for example, for broadband microwave absorption ~550 nm NiO nanoparticles coating over FAC is effective. Further, in situ conducting polymer (polyaniline or PANI)-FAC-based composite synthesis and preparation of solution processed ultrathin films are also described. Two case studies are explained here. In the first case, PANI/FAC-based composites were used as a filler in poly(vinyl butryl), secondly, PANI/FAC composites are directly solution processed. EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of these composites films is explained with a shielding mechanism. Each film SE exhibits ~20 dB (corresponds to 99 shielding) and shielding due to absorption is intrinsically predominant. FAC-loaded polymer nanocomposites also fulfill many commercial requirements such as facile fabrication, solution processing, and low cost. © 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
