Abstract

Stress corrosion cracking of Al-4.58Zn-0.24Ti [84722-30-5] and Al-4.84Cu-0.28%Ti [84722-28-1] was investigated at constant strain rate $0.5 x 10^{-3}$ 2.5x$10^{-5}/s$ in 1 M NaCl solution at room temp. From the decrease in tensile strength and ductility due to the exposure, the alloys exhibited a critical strain rate of apprx. $10^{-4}/s$, below which failure occurred predominantly by stress corrosion cracking and above which failure occurred mainly by mech. fracture. The alloys were more resistant in the cold-worked than in the annealed or aged conditions. The Ti addition to the Al-Cu alloy increased the stress corrosion resistance, but was detrimental to the Al-Zn alloy.
