Spectroscopic and kinetic insights of Pt-dispersion over microwave-synthesized GO-supported Pt-TiO2 for CO oxidation

Abstract

This study explores the effect of Pt and TiO2 dispersion on the catalytic activity and analyzes the kinetics of CO oxidation over a novel catalyst consisting of ultrafine Pt-particles decorated on GO-supported TiO2. Its catalytic activity is compared with catalysts synthesized by decorating Pt nanoparticles on (i) TiO2 (Aeroxide, P25), and TiO2 prepared by using (ii) sol-gel (TiO2-SG) and (iii) microwave techniques (TiO2-MW). A 99.9% conversion of CO to CO2 is observed at 150 degrees C on Pt-TiO2-GO, while it occurs at significantly higher temperatures over other catalysts. Detailed characterization of the catalysts using XRD, TEM, TGA, ICP-MS and BET suggests that this enhanced catalytic activity is because of the uniform dispersion of Pt-TiO2 nanoparticles on the high surface area GO sheets. A combination of DRIFTS and CO-TPD is used to develop a catalytic reaction pathway and is supported by a kinetic model. This study establishes that ensuring a uniform support and noble metal dispersion can be used to develop highly active catalysts. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
