Abstract

This paper investigates the use of an effective medium-based approach to analyse antenna simulations with reconfigurable metasurfaces or other periodic structures. It is shown that the effective properties of unit cells are unusable above resonance. Hence, it is proposed to use unit cells with a higher resonance frequency than the required operating frequency. Antenna simulations with a reconfigurable metasurface and with effective media are found to be in good agreement, and the latter is found to be faster. © 2023 IEEE.
