Abstract

The demand for low-carbon energy carriers to achieve a sustainable future has made hydrogen recovery from biogenic sources increasingly attractive. The current work reports the preliminary results of a lab-scale vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) system developed and integrated to a fixed-bed oxy-steam gasification unit to generate pure hydrogen in accordance with ISO 14687:2019 for proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) applications. The VPSA system is operated on a typical six-step Skarstrom cycle and produces high-purity hydrogen at a recovery of 60-65. The cyclic steady state of the process is confirmed through the column temperature and pressure profiles which remained uniform over 50 consecutive cycles. A temperature swing of 17 deg C is noted at the position of the mass transfer zone. Further, the adsorption and desorption pressure over the entire run are maintained at 2.7 and-0.4 bar-g, respectively, indicating a PH/PL of 6.2. Additionally, the contaminant analysis performed using reagent supported detector tubes established the ballpark quality of the VPSA output gas. The level of all the designated compounds is noted to be lesser than the respective minimum detection limit of the tubes, indicating a superior quality of the produced hydrogen.
