Abstract
This work considers the problem of UAV maneuvering formation generation guidance in the leader-follower configuration. The follower pursues a virtual target constructed around its desired position with respect to the leader. Constraining the position of the virtual target on an instantaneous circle around the follower’s desired position guarantees forma- tion generation and maintenance for all possible leader maneuvers. To pursue the virtual target, pure pursuit logic for follower’s heading along with a variable speed profile for the follower’s speed is used as the guidance logic. The work provides a new guidance frame- work for achieving and maintaining formations with varying leader maneuvers. Simulation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the guidance law for various formation maneuvers.
