Abstract

Rapid expansion of the power system networks combined with their operation near loadable limits warrant the need for faster tools to attain reliable operation and control. Power flow algorithm is a vital tool in this context at the steady state realm. A piecewise parallel approach to the power flow algorithm incorporating generator Q limits with the aim of reducing execution time is proposed in this paper. The power flow is formulated in terms of current mismatches instead of the conventional power mismatches and nonlinear complementarity framework is employed to incorporate the generator Q limits in the problem formulation stage itself. One of the salient features of the piecewise parallel approach is the invariance in number of iterations required for convergence from that of the network taken as a whole. The proposed algorithm is validated on 118, 300, 2383, 6515 and 9241 bus test systems. Effects of parallelization on different modules of the proposed algorithm are analyzed. Results obtained from the study show that considerable speedup for larger test cases can be achieved.
