Abstract

Because of its utility in various offensive and defensive applications the Ultra Wide band (UWB) system has been a subject of research in the last few decades. The Half Impulse Radiating Antenna (HIRA) based UWB system has attracted many researchers for experimentation and analysis due to its simplicity in design and fabrication. For a chosen geometry, effectiveness of the UWB system in terms of the radiated field bandwidth depends on the duration of the radiated pulse which is typically of sub nanosecond regime. This duration in turn depends on the rapidity of the switch closure used for the UWB source called 'pulser'. This paper presents the studies carried out on such a HIRA based UWB system which includes experimentations with a 50 kV pulser using various insulating gases/gas mixture as the switching media. The aim was to establish the relationship for such sub-nanosecond gas discharges between pulser switch breakdown voltage and gas pressure, rise time and gas pressure and effect of pulser input voltage on the pulse repetition rate (PRR), etc. The effect of switch performance on the radiated field output of the HIRA system was also experimented.
