Abstract

Buildings are estimated to consume in excess of 40% of global primary energy. Given the increasing energy demand, imminent climate change, and over-stressed land resources, buildings can become a potential site for integration of renewables. Solar energy being the most abundant of renewable energy, its integration in buildings is the current scope of this article. An overview of various solar energy technologies that can be utilized in a building is discussed. These technologies have been classified according to the mechanism of harnessing and utilization of solar energy in the form of heat, light, and biomass. With the specific case of solar photovoltaics, an integrability concept has been proposed and tested using case-studies. The integrability concept attempts to provide an integrated assessment involving the various functionalities of a building, viz., thermal comfort, occupant safety, ventilation, etc. The concept has been demonstrated for building integrated photovoltaic systems.
