Abstract

The advantages of polymeric insulators over the age-old ceramic or glass insulators laid the foundation for large-scale usage in power transmission. However, insulators in the field need to be monitored continuously for the proper functioning of the power system. In this chapter, the authors have attempted to evaluate the performance of 110 kV polymer housed insulators that were in service for 25 years. Performance evaluation was conducted both on the polymer housing as well as the core material to verify the level of degradation of the field aged insulators. The housing material was subjected to ESDD, NSDD, Hardness measurements, Hydrophobicity and FTIR. For FRP core, Dye Penetration and Water Absorption were conducted to verify the porous nature as well as the water resistance. Some interesting results obtained are presented.
