Abstract

The American myrmecologist, naturalist and writer Edward Osborne Wilson passed away on December 26, 2021. Wilson’s philosophy was “Love the organisms for themselves first, then strain for general explanations, and, with good fortune, discoveries will follow.” “I like to think,” Prof Raghavendra Gadagkar writes, “that Wilson was primarily a social insect specialist who, with characteristic energy, reached out to other organisms and disciplines.” Wilson gathered wisdom about the distribution of ants and other animals and plants that allowed him to build theories and test their predictions for years to come.
