Abstract
Stresses generated due to contact between an ideally rough but flat surface and a smooth cylinder are calculated using complex variable analysis. At low normal loads there are two possible responses: (i) the asperity is plastic when the subsurface is elastic and (ii) the asperity is elastic and the subsurface is plastic. It is found that it is possible to evoke a desired response by manipulating surface geometry and load
