Abstract
(1-x) PbMg1/3Nb2/3 xPbTiO3 ceramic with x = 0.50 is analyzed in this report. Structural and microstructural features were studied and correlated with the electrical properties exhibited by the densified ceramic capacitor. The tetragonal phase structure, along with uniform and dense microstructure of the ceramic composition, was identified as the reason for the observed functional modulations in the binary relaxor system. Contrary to the expectations based on crystal symmetry, the (1-x) PMN-xPT composition beyond the morphotropic phase boundary exhibited a lesser ferroelectric response along with reasonable relaxor attributes. This unusual feature in functional response was systematically analyzed to understand the underlying mechanisms. The ferroelectric study revealed a maximum EC value of 35.15 kV/cm, a remnant polarization Pr 18.91 μCcm 2, and a maximum recoverable energy of 55 mJ/cm3. The electrical attributes of the ceramic revealed in the study confirms the suitability of the composite for capacitor and actuator applications and opens opportunities such as thin film studies to realize smart and intelligent memory systems. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.
