In the rapidly evolving landscape of Industry 4.0, this research focuses on the transformative potential of smart factories and digital twin technology, specifically emphasising their implications for small and mid-scale industries. Digital twins (DT) can potentially increase output, reduce expenses, and improve efficiency. They offer real-time analytics and monitoring benefits but also drawbacks, such as high maintenance costs and security issues. To overcome these challenges, the future DT technology must focus on robust security measures and widespread knowledge sharing. Additionally, this paper introduces Tutwin, an innovative app designed for user-friendly exploration of DT-based technologies. Positive outcomes from user testing of the app highlight its intuitive design and accessibility. Interviews and surveys conducted during the study revealed a growing awareness and appreciation for DT technology, especially within small-scale industries. The study concludes by emphasising the need for technological understanding and tailored education strategies to foster wide- spread acceptance and integration of DT innovations into manufacturing practices. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
