Abstract
Despite more than five decades of research on patient dropout from therapy, obstacles in effective treatment delivery remain poorly understood. Methods to engage and retain clients within therapeutic settings are notably absent, with more than 67 of patients ending therapy before their tenth session. This study utilises an online survey involving eighty patients, along with semi-structured interviews with ten patients to shed light on the challenges in effectively addressing the complex nature of this problem. In light of the escalating prevalence of mental illnesses globally, with an estimated 450 million individuals facing mental health issues according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is important to understand and prevent treatment failures. This paper explores a collaborative care model in primary care settings, integrating bio-psychosocial therapies with complementary and alternative evidence-based treatments, along with cost effectiveness and affordability of interventions to maintain and improve patient outcomes. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.
