Abstract

This chapter describes the basic principles that can be used to scale up any industrial problem in process metallurgy. It explains, in detail, the various aspects of physical modeling along with the methods that are used to study any process at the laboratory scale. The basic laws that should be followed in replicating any industrial process at a laboratory scale study are described. It also describes the challenges faced during physical modeling. Once these replicas/prototypes obey these laws, the results obtained at the laboratory scale can confidently be applied to the industrial scale. This has been illustrated by giving specific examples of blast furnace raceways, basic oxygen furnaces in steelmaking, and other pyrometallurgical processes. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd.
