Abstract

Large-scale generation of plastic garbage is one of the primary environmental threats. Its demand is increasing quickly because of globalization and urbanization. Environmental problems associated with plastic waste pose a global hazard. Plastic waste from land-based sources frequently finds its way into bodies of water, where it poisons and floods the marine ecology, harming aquatic life. Several methods are under investigation to turn plastic wastes into usable products, which is considered an effective way of controlling them. "Plastic to energy" is a potential approach that reduces the trash burden on landfills. The chemical energy contained within can be used to extract fuel. The chapter elaborates on the scientific aspects of plastic energy extraction, including operational oversight to provide fuel with added value. We also recommend the best way to recycle and sort plastic garbage to maximize its economic viability and reduce environmental pollution. Techniques indicated and coordinated here are pyrolysis, hydrocracking, and thermal and catalytic cracking. These are a few essential process elements that can be worked upon for sustainable plastic treatment into fuel. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Arbind Prasad and Atanu Kumar Paul.
