Alloys of composition Al80Fe10V4Si6 and Al75Mn10Cr5Si10 were prepared using spray atomization and deposition process. The microstructure of the spray-deposit displayed homogeneous fine grains with uniform distribution of intermetallics of cubic structure in the matrix of both the alloys. The cubic phase was identified as a rational approximant structure of the icosahedral quasicrystal. The mechanisms governing the microstructural changes during spray deposition were studied. The consequences of solid/liquid fraction of droplets on the microstructural development during deposition process have been discussed. © 1996 by OPA (Overseas Publishers Association).
