Abstract
A brief comparative review is presented of the available routes for preparing metastable ceramic oxides. Chemical routes offer the greatest convenience and versatility as illustrated by the case of Al2O3-ZrO2. Some of the attempts to model the hierarchy of phase stability and the difficulties involved are described, with particular reference to alumina and zirconia based systems. © 1996 by OPA (Overseas Publishers Association).
