Athira, KS and Chokshi, AH (2018) Size Effect in Mechanical Behavior of Nb Microwires. [Book Chapter]
Full text not available from this repository.Abstract
Cu–Nb nanocomposites are good candidates to be used in high-pulsed magnetic fields due to their high strength along with high electrical conductivity. It is important to characterize the components of this composite to understand its properties. In this work, Nb microwires were extracted from a Cu–Nb composite and were also obtained commercially. They were of different sizes, but the XRD data showed that they had similar grain size. Thus, the differences in mechanical properties may be due to the size effect. The wires were tested in tension to find the strength and it was found that the smaller wire was weaker. The fracture surface analysis shows that the smaller wires were less plastic in nature.
