Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of a genotype to exhibit different phenotypes, especially in response to varying environmental scenarios. Decoding the mechanisms and implications of phenotypic plasticity is of fundamental interest in understanding evolution, embryonic development, homeostasis, and many human diseases. Phenotypic plasticity can be displayed at multiple time and length scales and across the levels of organization and regulation in biological systems - from macromolecular to cellular to organismal. Here, we introduce the concepts of phenotypic plasticity by discussing its manifestation in diverse forms and functions. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.
