Abstract

The efficiency of organic photovoltaics has reached 10.6 (Konarka Technologies, Inc., Massachusetts) as opposed to 45 efficiency observed in inorganic photovoltaics. Thus, there is a scope for the improvement of organic photovoltaics because of their simple processability, flexibility, and lightweightness. Commercialization is basically based on achieving better efficiencies suitable for optimal device performance following some strategies listed in Table 24.1 and also increasing the stability of the device throughout its lifetime. Apart from increasing the efficiency of the device, increasing the device lifetime can be looked upon as an intriguing challenge as it offers larger scope to maintain the device performance for longer periods and to mitigate the problem of device instability/failure, caused by external factors such as ultraviolet (UV) light, environmental conditions, and agents such as moisture, oxygen, and other reactive gases. © 2017 by Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
