Abstract
Malaria remains one of the leading global diseases in terms of both morbidity and mortality with about 2 million deaths occurring annually (WHO repor t, 2002). Out of the four species of Plasmodium that infect human, the infection caused by Plasmodium falciparum is most fatal. The resistance of Plasmodium falciparum to currently used drugs has resulted in a resurgence of malaria. The need for new drugs targets and drugs is thus imperative. The primary metabolic pathways that occur in the parasite offer an attractive target for the development of new drugs. One such metabolic pathway is the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway (FAB pathway), which is of the type II in the parasite as opposed to the type I pathway that is present in the host (mammals)(Wiesner and Seeber, 2005).
