Abstract

Bismuth ferrite (BFO) is a versatile multiferroic material that can be used at ambient temperature which offers a comprehensive package of multifunctionality among the many multiferroic compounds. The coexistence of many order parameters in BFO multiferroics and their novel physical properties finds new scope in research, and utility in a variety of applications in electronics and engineering. This chapter discusses the background and timeline of BFO along with advances in its different forms as ceramics, thin films, and nanostructures followed by a review of various synthesis techniques, a summary of the materials general properties, synthesis-related challenges, and possible device applications. Being an eco-friendly material that exhibits excellent functional properties, BFO is an ideal candidate for electronics and applications. © 2025 by Apple Academic Press, Inc.
