Modern protection and metering devices use voltages and currents of a power system from instrument transformers (CTs and PTs) to perform their protection and metering functions. The levels of voltage and current signals received from instruments transformers are further reduced using auxiliary transformers within these devices. As these signals are to be sampled and converted to equivalent digital numbers using A/D converters, it becomes essential to bandlimit them using anti-aliasing filters. The resulting signals are sampled and digitized at regular intervals based on the sampling frequency employed generally in the range of 600Hz9600Hz. A collection of digital samples, known as a window, acquired at regular intervals in this manner are further processed by the algorithms to achieve protection and metering functions. When a new sample value becomes available, the oldest sample is discarded and the newest sample is added to the window thus keeping the window length constant and in effect, moving the window as time progresses. This Chapter discusses the numerical algorithms used in the protection and metering devices. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
