Abstract

An MPD thruster formulation involving coupled aerothermodynamic electromagnetic equations and including viscous effects is developed and solved. The axial current density distribution at the cathode end surface is studied. It is found that propellant mass starvation away from the perimeter determines the shape of the current density distribution. Large values are found near the perimeter and much smaller values elsewhere on the cathode end surface. The effect of various input parameters on the axial current density is studied.
