Abstract
The cage vibrational frequencies of $Na^+$ ions in sodium borovanadate glasses have been examined using far-infrared spectros- copy. The glass transition temperature, $T_g$, is found to vary linearly with the cage vibrational frequency, v. The variation of v has been related to the average excess partial charge on the cage oxygen atoms and hence to the force constant. The observed linear variation of $T_g$ as a function of v has been rationalized on the basis of the cluster model of glass transition.
