Abstract

$^1H$ chemical shift spectroscopy has been used to determine the diffusing species in layered and defect pyrochlore structures of $HNbWO6{\cdot}xH_2O (x= 1.5, 1)$. A narrow signal at $\delta = 11.3$ ppm in the former indicates the presence and diffusion of $H_3O^+$ ions, while for the latter compound $\delta = 7.7$ ppm, implying the absence of $H_3O^+$ ions.
