Abstract

In the present work, a three-dimensional repeating unit cell (3D-RUC) is used to study the transverse behaviour of uni-directional fiber reinforced plastics (UD-FRPs). The effect of misalignment on plasticity and damage evolution is investigated under various loading conditions. Virtual microstructures are constructed with help of radial distribution function. The generated 3D-RUC is then subjected to combined loading in terms of transverse shear to direct compressive strains in a finite element framework. Fiber/Matrix debonding, plasticity based matrix damage are accounted for and investigated in the present work. The initiation and propagation of damage modes under pure compression and combined shear-compression loading conditions (for both straight fiber and misalgned fiber cases) are studied. © 2022, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA.
