Abstract

The work highlights the understanding of the life span prediction for the 25 kV traction conductor in service, and the primary intention is to estimate the actual replacement and/or maintenance time required for the traction copper conductors. The electrochemical corrosion analysis on the copper catenary wires was used to estimate the actual corrosion trends on the conductor. Efforts were made to study various traction conductors for different periods of exposure and different environmental conditions. It is observed that the nature of the corrosion trends dictates the possible rates of time and environment-induced degradation that occurred in these wires. The surface morphology analysis by SEMEDS was used to confirm the possible oxide/sulfide layer formed over the catenary wires. The open circuit potential and the Tafel plot analysis were used to explain the deteriorating behavior of copper catenary wires which were experiencing similar climatic condition employed in service. A comparative study is presented for fresh and various field aged catenary conductor samples and appropriate remedial measures are suggested for better performance during operating conditions. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
