Abstract
Using a phase field model, we study elastic stress driven rafting in elastically inhomogeneous systems with a dilatational misfit: we study both single particle and multiparticle systems. In both, the direction of elongation observed in the kinetic setting is the same as that predicted by the thermodynamic models. Growth of a single isolated particle is hastenend when the sign of the applied stress matches that of misfit; the extent of its elongation is larger if the particle is softer than the matrix. For a given particle size, a larger supersaturation leads to a smaller particle elongation. In multiparticle systems, elastic interactions among particles play a significant role during rafting. In particular, these interactions lead particles to migrate (for both hard and soft particles) and coalesce (for soft particles).
