Abstract

Detailed numerical simulation of internal flow during the starting transient period of operation has been carried out using a two dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. Parametric studies have been carried out with different igniter gas temperatures but with same Mach number. It is inferred that altered variation of igniter gas temperature will alter the flame-spread as well as the starting transient history of solid rocket motors. It is also observed that decrease in igniter gas temperature can decrease the ignition peak without altering the Mach number. Relatively high ignition peak and high pressurerise rate is observed for a rocket motor with port expansion configuration where secondary ignition is apparent. Detailed picture of the velocity distribution during the starting transient is also presented to establish the closeness of the internal flow simulation in solid rocket motors with non-uniform ports. © 2001 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
