Abstract
The main objective of the study was to explore the geopolymers to produce the compressed earth bricks for building construction. The paper presents the results of experimental investigations on geopolymer stabilised compressed earth specimens. The variables considered include, alkali concentration, clay content and percentage of ground slag and fly ash. The mix proportions of the variables were varied to assess optimum dosages for producing geopolymer stabilised compressed earth bricks. The results showed that the natural clay minerals in the soil do not yield sufficient strength. Use of ground slag and fly ash as an additional source of alumina and silica resulted in sufficient strength gain for the compressed earth specimen. The geopolymer stabilised compressed earth specimens showed efflorescence due to leaching of salts and the investigations showed that the efflorescence does not affect the strength. The products formed in the geopolymer stabilised compressed earth specimens were identified by employing the FTIR, XRD and NMR techniques. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd
