Abstract

The temperature dependence of resistance (1.5300 K) of electrochemically deposited vertically aligned Platinum nanowires (Pt-NWs) is characterized by using the Bloch-Grüneisen formalism (BG), Fuchs-Sondheimer theory (FS), Mayadas-Shatzkes model (MS) and Debye temperature (θR). The low value of θR ~34 K in Pt-NWs as compared to bulk Pt (θR ~ 242 K) shows significant phonon softening associated with the disorder. Fit to the temperature dependence resistance confirms the contribution of surface scattering and grain-boundary scattering where surface scattering dominates over grain-boundary scattering by a factor of 2. The low-temperature magneto-transport data up to 11 T in Pt-NWs shows deviations from Kohler's rule, especially in the longitudinal direction. This variation in transverse versus longitudinal MR can be used to probe the directional dependence of scattering from disorder in NWs.
