Abstract

Since large uncertainty is associated with composite materials owing to many uncontrollable parameters, quite different dynamic behavior can be observed from two different test specimen of the same engineering structure. This can mislead a model based damage detection system. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate the impact of material uncertainties in a vibration based damage detection problem. A composite plate having uncertainty in its engineering material properties is considered for this study. Statistical estimates of its structural dynamic behavior due to material randomness is obtained on a composite plate finite element model using Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). A recently proposed robust Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) using scalar modal frequencies and sliding window defuzzifier is extended for the damage detection problem employing two dimensional modal curvature vectors of the plate. The FLS is developed using changes in modal curvatures due to damage and randomness in material properties. Robustness of the FLS is demonstrated using numerical simulations for delamination detection even for high levels of randomness in the input data. © 2019 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.
