Abstract

We compare the performance of a TDMA multiple access scheme with a CDMA multiple access scheme when both are used for packet transmission in the circuit-mode. First we consider a more general model of slotted Aloha protocol on a channel with capture effect. Both TDMA and CDMA are shown to be special cases of this model. There are M<∞ users each with an infinite buffer. If in a slot, i packets are transmitted, then probability of a successful reception of a packet is qi. We state our results for this model and apply them to the special cases of TDMA and CDMA. We compare their stability regions, the rates of convergence to a stationary distribution and the delay moments. We find the range of the number of users and their arrival rates for which CDMA has higher throughput and lower delay moments as compared to the TDMA system.
