Studies on the mechanical properties of acetylated and phthalated starch blends with low density polyethylene (LDPE) were performed with and without LDPE-co-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer as compatibilizer. Impact and tensile properties of the blend specimens were measured following standard ASTM methods. Thermogravimetric analysis of esterified starches and of the blends were also conducted. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the fractured and unfractured blends. Results indicate a significant improvement in the mechanical properties by starch esterification, which is further enhanced by the addition of the compatibilizer.
