The problem of chemisorption, especially in the electrochemical context, was analyzed based on the cluster approach. In this approach the metal surface is represented by a set of atoms in their bulk superimposable surface geometry. Reasonably good description of the interactions at the electrode can be obtained by using the HOMO-LUMO picture of the electrode, adspecies, and solvent. The effect of applied potential (anodic/cathodic) on electrochemisorption is simulated by appropriate Fermi level shifts of the electrode. This could be a 1st step towards a unified MO approach to electrochemical surface science.
