Abstract

The axial splitting parameter D in dicalcium barium propionate doped with $Mn2^+$ was studied at 139-597 K, and the temp. dependence of D of phase-1 of the compd. was fitted to conform to a quadratic form at 265-597 K. The phase transition causes a slight deviation from the quadratic form above the transition temp., over a range of approx 50 K. The discontinuous change in the D-tensor at the cubic .tautm. orthorhombic transition at 267 K is analyzed in terms of an abrupt slowing of the propionate group flipping (between its 2 equil. positions), accompanied by a static distortion. The cubic phase is the time-av. of 2 equil. configurations corresponding to the low temperature phase.
