A comprehensive model for gasification of charcoal spheres in $CO_2-N$ mixture was studied. The charcoal gasification process involving diffusion and reactions in the pores was modelled and the results are compared with experiments of Standish and Tanjung on wood charcoal spheres with diameter d = 5-20 m. For $CO_2$ gasification the conversion time $t = d_{1.03}$ for large particles (>5 mm) departs substantially from the $tb = d_2$ law valid for diffusion-limited conditions. The computational studies indicate the kinetic limit for the particle ranges <3 mm in $CO_2$ ambient. The predictions from the model for charcoal conversion are compared with $CO_2-N_2$ experiments conducted by Standish and Tanjung. Also the dependence on the CO concentration with low $CO_2$ is significant, indicating the need to use a multistep reaction mechanism against the generally accepted single-step reaction.
