Abstract

The std. American Foundrymen's Society rammer can be used to measure the knockout property of molding sands by measuring the no. of std. blows (rams) required to sep. the sand core and the test casting surrounding the core. The no. of blows is a direct indicator of the knockout property of the sand. The test is simple and least time-consuming. The test conditions are identical to actual casting conditions and the results are good indicators of the knockout property. The knockout property of the 2Na silicate-bonded sand systems assessed indicate the hardener plays a vital role in controlling the knockout property and that the knockout property of any system is dependent on the temp. reached by the mold/core during casting.
