Abstract

REE geochemistry of plagioclase-free, plagioclase-bearing, and titanoclinohumite-bearing ultramafic rocks of the Chalk Hills (India) is presented. In comparison to chondrites, the plagioclase-free ultramafics are 10 times light REE-depleted but the heavy REE abundance is 1-2 times greater. These REE patterns are considered primary and compare well with those of high-temperature peridotites. The plagioclase-bearing ultramafics and the gabbros have light-REE contents 4-22 times chondritic and a heavy REE abundance 2-12 times greater. Petrogenetic modeling, based on partial melting of spinel peridotites as source rocks with 2 times chondritic abundance, indicates that the plagioclase-free ultramafics represent the residue remaining after extension of 8-10% as melt. On the other hand, the REE patterns of the plagioclase-bearing ultramafics and the gabbros suggest that they represent compns. of depleted parent magma. The ultramafic association of the Chalk Hills is distinctly different from the igneous suites associated with ophiolites and alpine peridotites.
