Abstract

The crit. value of the J-integral of the title composites increases with increasing C content at 2-6% but decreases at 6-8%. The toughening of the title composites by C particles and nitrile-rubber is due to crack pinning, which occurs as the propagating cracks encounter rigid additives firmly bonded to the resin matrix, to plastic shear yielding, and to the termination of wider cracks and ribbons.
