Abstract
In this article I wish to focus on what a professional society can do in promoting biochemical education in a country. The Society of Biological Chemists (India) represents the interests of biochemistry and allied sciences in India. It has a membership of about 2000 and organizes many symposia and an annual meeting in different parts of the country. It celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1980 and hosted the joint meeting with the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists (FAOB) held in Bangalore. The Society provides a forum for biochemists to meet and discuss their work. Most importantly these meetings give an opportunity for young biochemists to be exposed to current developments. As an annual feature the Society organizes a discussion on Biochemical Education. Some useful activities emanate from these, however modest these may be.
