Abstract

Grignard reaction of the tetralone followed by p-toluenesulfonic acid-catalyzed dehydration of the resulting alcs. gave the 5,6-dihydroisoquinolines I ( R = Me, CHMe2, CMe3, Ph, R1 = H). Reaction of I (R = H, Me, CHMe2, CMe3, Ph, R1 = H; R = H, R1 = Me, CMe3) with KNH2-NH3 yields a mixt. of 1,2-dihydroisoquinolines (II) and isoquinolines (III). However, reaction of I (R = R1 = H) with other bases (NaOMe, t-BuOK, NaH) yields only III (R = R1 = H).
