Abstract

Prodn. of extracellular cellulase by C. thermophile var coprophile isolated from soil, and grown in culture medium under different exptl. conditions, was studied. Cryst. cellulosic sources were better than impure or amorphous cellulosic materials for cellulase prodn. Supplementation of peptone and yeast ext. to the culture medium increased cellulase prodn. by severalfold. Endocellulase, exocellulase, $\beta$-glucosidase, and xylanase were identified in the culture filtrate and were elaborated into the cellulase system into the medium in terms of its capacity for hydrolyzing highly ordered cellulose to glucose. Biochem. estns. and light microscopic observations showed that C. thermophile utilizes appreciable quantities of cellulose rapidly.
