Abstract

The effect of plasma temperature on the radial current density distribution at the cathode longitudinal surface of an MPD arcjet is theoretically investigated by solving the electromagnetic equations for a typical geometry. It is found that the magnitude of the current density increases strongly with increasing temperature and beyond a certain temperature, a current density concentration develops at the cathode upstream edge. This temperature is species dependent and has values of 10,000 K and 8,500 K for argon and hydrogen respectively.
