We use the simulated annealing approach to solve the group technology (GT) problem. It is well known that this problem belongs to the class of NP complete nonlinear integer programming problems. Several heuristic approaches have been reported in the literature but these do not work for the large scale problems. We consider a simulated annealing based approach that is very effective for solving large scale GT problems in terms of CPU time and the quality of the solution.
